A Message From
Executive Director, Jeryll W Adler
Welcome to Pacific Stages.
Los Angeles is a wonderful city, filled with theatre, dance, music and art. Our lives here are busy with family, work and so many compelling and dynamic opportunities. Living in the midst of the entertainment capital of the world can make you dizzy – so many choices! Pacific Stages is a newcomer to this vibrant community of arts lovers. As the population centers of Los Angeles grow denser and transportation more time consuming and costly, so too does our need to develop and support a cultural life that more clearly represents and serves local populations. To date, no theatre company has aggressively and persistently developed a vision and plan that resembles the evolving profile of the South Bay communities. Pacific Stages has been working towards that goal since 2004.
You can join and support us as at a very exciting time in our development. We are about to embark on our first season, launching in February 2010. We will present Lobby Hero by Kenneth Lonergan, directed by our Associate Artistic Director Robert Bailey. Our cast is Dana Lynn Bennett and Pacific Stages Artists Company members Kareem Ferguson, Nick Mennell and Edward Tournier. Lonergan is amongst our most articulate and original voices, currently represented in New York on Theatre Row with the play Starry Messenger, featuring Matthew Broderick. He is perhaps best known for his Oscar nominated film You Can Count On Me and his stage play This Is Our Youth, which was presented in March 2009 at our Douglas Street Salons series. This concert reading of the play featured Artists Company members Brad Fleischer, Ari Graynor and Chris Pine. Lobby Hero will debut our inaugural season.
The second play of our season is Something Happened, written and directed by award winning playwright and Pacific Stages Artists’ Company member L Trey Wilson. In 2004 Wilson’s drama Stage Directions was an LA Weekly Ovation Nominee & LA Drama Critics Circle Award Winner for Best New Play. We are honored to be entrusted in our inaugural season with the World Premiere of this astonishing new play. Something Happened is a rollicking good time that will reach into your soul with a heartbreaking and ultimately life affirming twist on family values
Pacific Stages work is chosen from two categories of American playwrights, the more established names and the next generation of the best. What all of these writers will share in common is a love and talent for great stories and great characters. While our audiences may recognize the names of the writers they are unlikely to have seen the particular plays that comprise our season. We will illuminate, provoke, open minds and hearts and reflect our nation’s diversity and dialogues. We will not be sensational for the mere sake of controversy, but instead will challenge with material that is not only entertaining but timeless and meaningful.
Please join us for our inaugural season at our new home in El Segundo. And do spend a bit of time exploring our website to learn more about our highly unusual beginnings and the exciting partnerships that have nurtured us on the road to a truly miraculous future.
We look forward to meeting you.
